What is a geeknic?
Well, you are probably here because someone told you about this wonderful thing called a geeknic. So what is it, you may ask? A geeknic is rather simply a picnic for geeks. Throughout 2009, we’re planning (and helping others plan) geeknics all over the world. Anywhere there are geeks, we would love to see a geeknic happen.
So what happens at a geeknic? Well, it will vary by location, by what is available at the site, and by the decisions of the planners of each individual geeknic. No two geeknics will be the same, but they will all be exciting and fun events for local geeks. The common theme is meeting in the outdoors (something unusual for us geeks) and having a good time.
When possible, many geeknics will be attended by freenode staff, but regardless we’re here and happy to help promote geeknics, so if you need help and would like to organize your very own local geeknic, let us know at geeknic@geeknic.org.
You can also find us at #geeknic on irc.freenode.net, and we now have a facebook group too!
Gatlinburg, Tennessee Smoky Mountains Geeknic
Our second annual Smoky Mountains GeekNIC will take place the weekend after Memorial Day, so hopefully the crowds will still be manageable and the weather not too hot. This is also a family friendly event, which is why we’re staying at a hotel with a built in water park. Obviously the last item on each day’s agenda is less family oriented, which is why it’s past most kids’ bedtime.
More details are to come, but the high level schedule is:
Friday
4 PM – Tour of ORNL and new 3D Visualization Lab
915 Westgate Resort Road, Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Pennsylvania Pinball Geeknic, December 15th.
On December 15th 2012, from 4pm to 6pm, we have reserved the Pinball Parlour in Franconia PA for our exclusive use. All games will be on freeplay, and the cost at the door is $15 a person.
Afterwards, we will head to dinner at a nearby restaurant.

On Memorial day 2012 we’ll be heading to Kemper Park, at 905 Valley Road (Valley & Sinkler Roads) in Warminster PA

We’ll be starting around 2pm, and sticking around until we all get tired of it. If you’ll be joining us, please bring along a food or drink item to help out and email richpacs@sias.us.

We’re going camping! Two nights of camping in an awesome park. Cost is $15 a person and there is plenty to do, with a museum and observatory within the park grounds, along with 15 miles of hiking trails. Your cost covers the site fees, and pays for wood for the fire and smore supplies as well as emergency supplies. Anyone attending will need to bring in food but we do share, cook, and eat together.
Children under 18 attending with an adult are free. You can register for the trip here, but spaces are limited! Information on what to do, what to bring, etc, will be available here.

Geeknic Heather Farms, you do NOT have to be a geek to attend, maybe you just know someone who is. Maybe you are just interested for yourself and figure that a BBQ makes it a no-lose proposition.
We are going to be meeting outdoors and having a good time. We will have hotdogs, and some other good grilling fun. We’ll also have some vegetarian options also, vegetables shish kabobs (with or without tofu.) What are you bringing?
